Game 22 - Sweeping the Browns

May 13, 1911
Philadelphia 7, St. Louis 0

Eddie Plank serves up a 4-hit gem allowing the A's to cash in on their first sweep of the year (as well as their third shutout). Joe Lake, who had a thoroughly unremarkable career, had a bit of trouble with the bottom of the Athletics' order; the 6 through 9 hitters collected 9 of the 13 Philadelphia hits of the day (though why red-hot Stuffy McInnes was hitting 7th baffles me).

Meanwhile, the Tigers lose just their fifth game , allowing Philadelphia a rare chance to gain a game on their western rivals. They're still in third place, but now six and a half back.

With the Browns dispatched, the Athletics are set to make their triumphant return to Chicago, 202 days after clinching World Series glory there. Of course, this time they'll be facing their league-mates the White Sox, who are 2 and a half games behind them, for a four-game set.
